Capcom reveals big changes to the Pro Tour competition

The $600,000 USD tournament will feature Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.

The Capcom Pro Tour is a circuit of competition for Capcom's fighting games, and now the company has revealed big changes coming to this year's instalment, including the fact that this year Street Fighter V will be making way for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition.

The Capcom Cup will still be a culmination of the best players in the world (32 of them in fact), and players can qualify for this by competing at events in the Capcom Pro Tour throughout the year. Rules have been tweaked though, as Capcom wanted to "streamline the process of qualifying for Capcom Cup and to make the competition more accessible."

Reigning champion MenaRD, for example, qualifies automatically to defend his title, although he'll need to compete throughout the year to determine seeding and to win the prize money available at different events. For other players though there's the Last CHance Qualifier, who wants to compete and isn't already qualified for the finals, as well as the Pro Tour leaderboard, since Capcom will be taking the top players from the Global Leaderboard as well as Regional finalists to fill the remaining spots in the cup.

In terms of points though the values have been adjusted to "better streamline and balance the point distribution after evaluating last year's results. Similar to last year, the overall goal is to have more logical weighting around events, the amount of points rewarded, and the number of players that receive points. As such, for 2018, more significance will be placed on winning Global Premier Events. We've also reduced the amount of players who are eligible for Capcom Pro Tour points."

There are also structural changes to the Pro Tour as well, as there will be 14 Premier Events as part of this new emphasis, as well as four Regional Finals and the Evo Championship Series. Winners of these Premier Events will get a lot of CPT points, so they're hugely important, and "this was done to ensure players earn a significant advantage for winning Premier Events and increase their chances to qualify for Capcom Cup at the end of the year."

Ranking Events will also take place in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, with players competing online and offline for the chance to earn a spot in these finals. It's worth noting, however, that the amount of CPT points gained from Ranking Events and the number of players getting points have been slightly reduced, and that this year Regional Finals also include an open tournament, allowing players from any region to compete.
