At the Six Invitational in 2018 Penta Sports lifted the trophy after a dramatic comeback in the grand finals against Evil Geniuses, and the largely unchanged roster - now including Juhani 'Kantoraketti' Toivonen - has made it two years in a row as they have just become world champions once more.
The road to the final wasn't easy, as despite graduating first out of their group with two wins they dropped a map against Spacestation Gaming in a surprise result in the quarter-finals. They bounced back to win the match 2-1, but their shaky performance convinced some that it might not be them on the winner's podium this time around.
Their grand final opponents of 2018 Evil Geniuses were knocked out in the quarter-finals by fellow NA side Team Reciprocity, however, and it was Reciprocity that subsequently fell to G2 in the semi-finals 2-0. G2 had regained their form, and they were due to face Team Empire in today's grand final, another EU team who had beaten Liquid and Nora-Rengo 2-1 each to get there.
The first map is one that will go down in history, and not only because it was the longest in Siege history. With unlimited overtimes both teams were pushed to no less than 22 rounds on Coastline before G2 finally grabbed victory by a 12-10 margin, and it was a tense back and forth that saw both sides hold a numerical advantage over the other at different times.
The second map on Border ended 7-4, with Empire fighting back against a 5-1 deficit to make things close once more, but on the last map Bank it was G2's time to show why they're world champions. They ended the map 7-1 with several dominating rounds over their competitors to make it 3-0 in the best-of-five series, and claimed the hammer as their own once more.
The trophy might be sweet, but the 40% cut of the prize pool is even sweeter, since the pool currently sits at the capped value of $2 million USD, meaning they walk away with $800,000 of that. That said, Empire still walks away with $320,000, which is hardly a disappointment.
