Awarding players with pins and fut...

Epic Games has announced that In-Game Tournaments are coming to the Events section of Fortnite Battle Royale with v6.10 of the game, confirming rumours that have been floating around for a while about these events.

Each tournament has a series of dates and times and is a clean slate for players, with everyone starting on the same score and able to compete for several hours. Like with esports, points can be earned for both victories and a high number of eliminations, and matchmaking will pair players with similar points.

There will be a target score in these tournaments to aim for, and reaching this will get you a "shiny pin" to celebrate. In the future these may advance you to the next round or qualify you for prizes too.

Players will all compete against one another regardless of control schemes, with every player playing in the same competitions from start to finish.

"We've been observing the performance of controller players in our Summer Skirmish, PAX West, and Fall Skirmish tournaments while playing against mouse and keyboard players at the highest levels of competition," Epic explains. "Competitors such as NickMercs, Ayden, KamoLRF, and AmarCoD have shown that controller players can be successful while competing against some of the best PC players in the world."

"Combining everyone into a single competition will allow for players to compete with their friends regardless of platforms and will allow us to place a single shining spotlight onto the world's best players, increasing prize pools and player exposure from our competitions."

This will be evaluated throughout the competitive season, but for now you can find the tournament schedule in the image below.

Looking further ahead though, Epic will continue to develop Tournaments to allow for events across multiple rounds, with players needing a pin to qualify for each subsequent round. They also promise an "exciting and varied schedule of tournaments for players of all talent levels, featuring new scoring formats and support for additional modes."

What's more is that later this year players will get the chance to qualify for the 2019 Fortnite World Cup directly through a Showdown Royale event in-game.

Is Tournaments a welcome feature?
